The temporomandibular joint is the joint that attaches your jaw to the rest of your body. This joint, also known as your jaw joint, regularly withstands the enormous pressures from chewing while remaining flexible enough to allow you to speak and move your jaw freely.

Dysfunction of your jaw joint can result in inflammation and pain, a condition known as TMJ disorder or simply TMJ. Swelling from inflammation and damage to the tissues of the joint can impair the joints ability to function, cause jaw pain and headaches, and result in difficulty eating and swallowing.

Common treatments for TMJ include pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medication, cold compresses, mouth guards and orthodontic appliances, physiotherapy and massage. More serious cases may require surgery.
