Crowns

Crowns are permanent restorations for teeth that have been lost, or to cover teeth that are damaged or decayed and at risk. They are made from material strong enough to resist biting forces. Ceramic, porcelain, acrylic and gold are common materials used for crowns.

The procedure for placing a crown begins with preparing the area where the crown is to be placed and taking impressions of your teeth to be used in creating the crown. Once the crown is ready, it is fitted over the existing tooth, or onto a bridge or dental implant if the tooth is completely missing, checked for fit and appearance, and cemented into place.

Once in place a crown looks and functions like a regular tooth. You need to brush and floss around the crown just as you would a normal tooth.

Bridges

Bridges are used to replace a tooth that has been completely lost so no root remains. By filling the gap left by the missing tooth (or teeth) the bridge restores function and appearance to your smile, and stabilizes the teeth in the area, preventing bite problems.

There are three common styles of bridges used. The most widely used bridge is a fixed bridge, which attaches a replacement tooth to crowns placed on the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

A Maryland bridge is similar to a fixed bridge, but it uses metal bands attached to the natural teeth instead of crowns to secure the bridge.

A cantilever bridge is used in cases when there is only one natural tooth next to the gap. The bridge is secured to the natural tooth and the tooth next to it.
